Reflections of Week 4

This week was really hectic.
First was to identify the problems of my class.
I had earlier described about a training program conducted with group second language (L2) students of Engineering and Business Management. The students were enrolled in advanced levels of the university's Engineering and Business Management programs and were applying for placements in private enterprises.

I  identified problems related to students and the teachers point of view.

Student Related Issues-
1.Lack of Motivation and seriousness
2.Mix ability class
3.Strong Mother Tongue Influence on spoken English
4.Fear of failure

Teacher Related Issues-

The first problem which I faced as a teacher was related to approach of teaching. When we talk about the 'process' of language teaching we will have to consider the aim or desired end result of the 'process'. Richard Allwright aptly remarks, “If communication is THE aim, then it should be THE major element in the process. The question could be put: Are we teaching language (for communication)?
Or
Are we teaching communication (via language)?”- (The Communicative Approach to Language Teaching pp.167)

1.First problem was related to decide on this very issue of ,"Are we teaching language (for communication)?
Or
Are we teaching communication (via language)? "

2.We have only 30 hours for these students.  The second issue was how to select different modules and integrate innovative methods to get the desired result of producing good candidates for corporate selection process.

I have taken the approach of calling these problems as areas of improvement to motivate myself and the students
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

This week's topic was focused on how to use technology to enhance reading, writing, and vocabulary skills.
I went through some of the articles in week 4 assignments on our course google site

I explored Breaking News English (http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/)    which I found a very useful site for my learners. It has more than 1500 free and well designed lessons. I selected U.K. cancels visas of 2,500 students http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/1209/120901-student_visas.html.My target students have background information related to this topic.

Then I searched Activities for ESL students http://a4esl.org/ in which I opened English Vocabulary Quizzes - Difficult

The lesson starts with a good warm up activity. It has some interesting before while and after reading activities followed by discussion and homework.

Then I searched Activities for ESL students http://a4esl.org/ in which I opened English Vocabulary Quizzes - Difficult-

Then I discussed about ABCD outcome for these sites.

All these websites have a lot of material which has to be carefully selected considering the background and needs of the learners.

The last and most demanding activity was to create Sample lesson plan with technology which was the outcome of all our learning in this course.

Reflections of week-3

Week 3 started with the task of creating own page on Delicious.com and save at least 3 bookmarks. Share the URL of your page with the group. It was a new experience for me.It will always help me to bookmark and organize my web search. The best thing about delicious is that you get benifit of Group search and sharing.Knowledge and information grows when you share it.I can say that if we apply the meaning of word delicious in the context of our websearch;it is really delicious.

I went through the report of Aleyda Linares from Universidad Pedagogica Nacional Francisco Morazan of Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Project: Building Teaching Skills Through the Interactive Web Project Report. It gave me an idea about the type of report we will have to produce.Over I found her report to be  very analytical and appropriate.

In the task related to"Aural/Oral Skill Building"

I read the article of Julia Gong on The Employment of CALL in Teaching Second/Foreign Language Speaking Skills and another on Developing Listening Skills with Authentic Materials by Lindsay Miller.
Three stages listening suggested by Miller of pre listening task, While-Listening Task and Post-Listening Task are very appropriate.

Based on the new information provided in these two articles I selected BBC LEARNING ENGLISH (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/pron/)for improving pronunciation of my students. This web site is very systematic. It has
The sounds of English (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/pron/sounds/index.shtml)
I revisited www.teachenglish.org.uk where I further searched for lesson plans on http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/lesson-plans.I was looking for a plan related to technology .I found Ebooks ( http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/sites/teacheng/files/Ebooks-lesson-plan_1.pdf) and worksheets(  http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/sites/teacheng/files/Ebooks-worksheets.pdf) Submitted by Sally Trowbridge on 27 September, 2011 .
The week was very hectic but full of learning.I replied to Cherry's blog. Now onwards I will manage my time in a better way to get the best from the course and also to give my best to the course.

Reflections of week 2

Week two has started on a very positive note.

The topic of Discussion - Web Searching was really very interesting. All of us  reviewed different search engines and analyzed them  in terms of use in their own classes and shared  their advantages and disadvantages with recommendation about the search engine.I was amazed to see such a wonderful way of searching the web.Now I have a firm belief that in this technology driven information age developing your knowledge skills and expertise is dependent on your web skills.

The task - ABCD Model for Behavioral Objectives gave a new dimension to my teaching methodology.I posted my findings about my class in this perspective. It has given me new ideas to teach and train my students.

Project Task 1 - Describing my class helped me to plan my objectives for future training of my students

As for as the blogging is concerned  sharing my reflections on what I did and what I learned this week has added a lot of value to my insight.

Reflections

Hi Everyone

This is my first experience of creating a blog.Due to some reasons I could not give my reflections earlier. It is a unique experience to share your learning on a blog which is a very interactive platform.

This course provides us an opportunity to see this activity as a learners point of view where we can follow these good practices with our students with required modifications.

I used to read blogs earlier without actively participating in the discussions. But that is a thing of past.I have learnt how a teacher/trainer can plan and make an effective use of blogging by making it interactive.

I am really excited to learn a lot of new  things from all of you.I would like to thank Courtney and her colleagues for starting this program on a very promising note.

I am looking forward to have a wonderful time with all of you.

Regards.
